Source: This Old House, Syracuse tree removal costs, checked October 2026. Your quote depends on the tree in front of you, so treat these as a starting point.
What drives the price up
- Size. Height and trunk diameter set the baseline. A 70-foot oak and a 20-foot crabapple are completely different jobs.
- What's underneath. A tree over the house, garage, fence or wires has to come down in sections on ropes. That's slower and costs more than dropping a tree in an open yard.
- Access. A backyard behind a fence with no room for a truck means more carrying by hand.
- Condition. A dead tree, especially an ash killed by emerald ash borer, can be too brittle to climb safely and may need a lift or extra rigging.
- Emergencies. A tree already on the house costs more than the same tree taken down on a calm day.
The hidden cost: getting rid of the wood
In the Town of Manlius, the brush district only takes branches up to 5 feet long and 3 inches thick, never stumps, and contractor brush isn't accepted at the Highway Department drop-off. A whole tree's worth of logs and limbs has to go somewhere, so make sure chipping and haul-away are in the quote. More in our tree & brush rules guide.
Ways to save
- Bundle the work. Several trees or stumps in one visit cost less than separate trips.
- Keep the wood. Having the trunk left as firewood rounds means less to haul.
- Don't wait on a dying tree. A tree that can still be climbed is usually cheaper to remove than one that's been dead for a few years.
- Add stump grinding to the same visit instead of booking it later.
